GALWAY est la ville la plus irlandaise, profondément attachée aux traditions gaéliques.
On l’appelle la « Ville des Tribus », en référence aux 14 tribus ou grandes familles de marchands qui en ont fait une ville-état indépendante, depuis la moitié du XVIIIe siècle jusqu’à la fin du XIXe siècle.

La ville a été influencée par les Espagnols, comme en témoigne la fameuse SPANISH ARCH ou “Arc espagnole”, construite en 1584 au bord du fleuve Corrib, qui se réfère à l’ancien commerce marchand avec l’Espagne.
